RESULTS: 2021-2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS)

(News update: January 6, 2022)

Society for Science proudly announces the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2022, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. This year 7 students from the Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair are in the top 300.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides students a national stage to present original research and celebrates the hard work and novel discoveries of young scientists who are bringing a fresh perspective to significant global challenges. The 300 scholars and their schools will be awarded $2,000 each. The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,805 applications received from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and 8 other countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists and hail from 185 American and international high schools and homeschools in 37 states, China, Switzerland and Singapore.

The top 40 finalists will be announced on January 20, 2022. The winners of the STS will be announced on March 15, 2022.

RESULTS: 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair

On May 21st, 2021 the Society for Science and Regeneron announced the Grand Awards of the Regeneron ISEF 2021. This year marked the first time in its more than 70-year history that the competition was held virtually to keep the finalists and their families safe during the ongoing pandemic.

This year the 1,833 Regeneron ISEF 2021 finalists representing 49 states and 64 countries across the world convened virtually for a week of connecting with their peers and global STEM leaders, participating in virtual events and panels, showcasing their talents and competing for $5 million in awards and prizes. 

Seven students from the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair were among the finalists in the ISEF: six qualified through the GSDSEF and one qualified through the California Science and Engineering Fair. For the first time in GSDSEF history, all 7 students won a Grand Award - one 1st Award, one 2nd Award, three 3rd Awards, two 4th Awards.   Additionally, two students won three Special Awards.

Grand Awards are presented in each of the 21 ISEF categories:

  • 1st Award: $5,000
  • 2nd Award: $2,000
  • 3rd Award: $1,000
  • 4th Award: $500

China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) is the largest organization of scientists and technologists in China. One of its missions is to promote public understanding of science. CAST awards are given to the projects that best reflect the originality and innovation of the students’ work in all scientific disciplines.

Patent and Trademark Office Society

The PTOS is a membership-based organization for Patent and Trademark professionals and other interested individuals. RESULTS: 2021 Broadcom MASTERS Top 300

The 2021 Top 300 students,  selected from 1,841 entrants, come from 41 states, plus Guam. 30 finalists will be chosen from this select pool to compete for more than $100,000 in awards and prizes. Finalists will be announced September 14, 2021.

2021 California Science and Engineering Fair Results:

The 2021 CSEF was held virtually with 811 students presenting 722 projects participating statewide. 89 students from the GSDSEF qualified for the CSEF.

In the Junior Division, 16 GSDSEF students received place awards:

  • 1st Place Award: 4
  • 2nd Place Award: 1
  • 3rd Place Award: 3
  • 4th Place Award: 4
  • 5th (Honorable Mention): 5

In the Senior Division, 18 students received place awards:

  • 1st Place Award: 2
  • 2nd Place Award: 2
  • 3rd Place Award: 3
  • 4th Place Award: 6
  • 5th (Honorable Mention): 5

2021 Information and Student Exhibitor Directory Front Cover

 

In the 67th Annual Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, we had

  • a Virtual Fair due to COVID-19 restrictions – student exhibitors submitted their notebook, a judging slide deck and optional video, and were then interviewed virtually by teams of judges
  • over 450 students in San Diego and Imperial Counties submitted proposals for SRC Approval
  • over 300 students who were recommended to participate and 281 who completed the application
  • 276 student exhibitors went through virtual interviews with the judges on zFairs
  • 179 Junior Division student exhibitors submitted projects, 174 were judged
  • 102 Senior Division student exhibitors submitted projects were submitted, 100 were judged
  • 50 schools participated – 48 in San Diego County and 2 in Imperial County
  • 31 schools participated in Junior Division (29 middle schools and 2 elementary school) with 34 teacher/advisors
  • 19 high schools participated in Senior Division with 38 teacher/advisors
  • 89 projects that qualified for the California Science and Engineering Fair (CSEF)
  • 28 projects in Junior Division that were nominated to Broadcom MASTERS
  • 4 Grand Awards in Senior Division and 4 Grand Awards in Junior Division
  • 4 Grand Award Runners-Up in Senior Division and 4 Grand Award Runners-Up in Junior Division
  • 4 Grand Award winners and 2 Grand Award Runners-Up winners in the Senior Division were selected as ISEF Finalists and will compete in the 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in May, 2021
